The London Stone
Anyone who knows me is well aware that there is nothing
I like better than a jolly good stone.
The only thing better than a grand or obscure lithic is the search for it.
As far as the London Stone goes, this mysterious oolithic Limestone is one of the better ones, easily making a top ten list based solely on its provenance, of rather lack thereof.
Known and recorded for at least a millennia absolutely nothing is known of its origin.
Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze age, Iron age, Roman etc. etc. etc.
No one knows.
Easy to find and located at 111 Cannon Street, London, Blighty.
There is no great difficulty in locating it nor any traipsing past
lowing cattle or through muddy fields required.
Hang your head in shame if you've been to London
without visiting this wonder of the ancient world.....and they said the Pyramids of Giza were something to see.
This enigmatic, perplexing and delightful relic, resplendent
in its Portland stone enclosure, is FREE to visit !
“So long as the stone of Brutus is safe, so long shall London flourish”.
Keep the wheels turning.
