Ballyadams Castle

Ballyadams Castle

Ballyadams Castle lies downhill from the Windy Gap of Stradbally (my usual approach) but closer to Ballylinan and the N80 - N78 Crossroads. From the N80 side Ballyadams is signposted and easy enough to find.

The Castle itself was built sometime in the 15th century and was the residence of the O'Moores. It has a long and varied history while the rear of the Castle was a later 17th century addition. It stands on private land which I believe is owned by the Butler family who have an association with the castle for several generations. The doors from the Castle were unfortunately stolen in 2018. Access should be arranged through the landowner, I wouldn't recommend traipsing around without permission.

I believe the Castle was destroyed in the rebellion of 1798. The front facade of the building is an impressive sight indeed and in a reasonable state of preservation.

It's a nice cycle by way of including the Windy Gap or Clopook into the spin and maybe a quick coffee in Stradbally while you're at it.

The front of Ballyadams Castle incorporates a beautiful architectural feature that I have since discovered is called a Manchicolation (the horizontal protrusion below the top window). This was an early type of burglar alarm. It allowed the defenders to safely throw rocks or boiling oil onto anyone brave enough to attack through the front door.

My thanks are due to the landowner for allowing me access to photograph this beautiful building.

It is well worth a small detour on the bike to drop by and see it. Gems like this Castle are often to be found hidden away on the byroads.
