Clonca High Cross
Clonca is a quiet and interesting place on the Inishowen peninsula in Donegal.
Located at a rural crossroads the relics at Clonca are surrounded by green fields and panoramic views.
The ruins of a 17th century Church are the first thing that comes into view as you approach the site. The lintel over the doorway predates the medieval Church.
Carved with well worn figures it seems to be made of the same type of stone as the lintel to be found at nearby Carndonagh Church of Ireland which is in good condition.
The Church is beleived to lie on the former site of a 6th century monastery possibly founded by Saint Boudan or Saint Morialagh. Both of these named Saints seem to be associated with the area.
Inside the Church is the ornately decorated grave slab of Magnus Mac Orristin probably dating from the 15th century.
Unusual to see there is a Sword, Hurley and Sliotar carved onto the slab along with an inscription naming Magnus and the Stonemason who carved it, Fergus.
I've no idea whether Magnus used both the Hurley and Sword at the same time although I'd imagine the G.A.A. wouldn't let you onto the pitch these days with a Sword. I suppose that's Heath and Safety for you, always throwing a spanner into the works.
It's believed that Magnus was a Gallowglass, a soldier for hire and originally from the Hebrides in Scotland.
Beside the Church is an "unringed" High Cross with elaborate decoration. There are several "unringed" style Crosses without the "Celtic" type ring or wheel located on the Inishowen peninsula.
The Clonca High Cross is a beautiful example of its type with lots of rich carvings including interlaced patterns, motifs, and biblical figures and animals. The top of the cross was damaged and has been repaired.
Roughly 200 yards away from this High Cross is the remains of another, a fallen High Cross and its base socket.
This Cross would have been quite impressive when it originally stood. The head and socket of the Cross are large and there are carvings on it which are now difficult to make out.
With pleasant views and beautiful countryside Clonca is well worth including on any itinerary. It is near Culdaff.
