Fore Abbey, Westmeath

Fore Abbey

Fore Abbey, Westmeath, Ireland.

Fore Abbey in Westmeath is an absolutely stunning location. The small village of Fore is home to a 13th century Benedictine Abbey but it was originally the site of a 7th century Monastery.

The arched remains of entrance's to the village lie at either end of the road that pass's the site.

There is also a beautiful Anchorite's cell (a type of hermitage), the remains of a Columbarium (pigeon house, source of food), a Holy Well, the ruins of Saint Féichíns 7th century Church and a fortified building to the rear of the Abbey.

The Abbey itself is quite large and visually striking with parts of the cloister's arches still standing and the stonework is outstanding.

There are I believe 18 Cross's spread out on the approach to Fore and I presume these were markers for pilgrims to follow to the site in times past. Unfortunately I didn't see any of them but I didn't go looking properly.

I've cycled here once and returned again to spend more time enjoying the Abbey and the rest of Fore's antiquities. There is quite a lot to see and I'm amazed it's not buzzing with visitors.

The original Monastery reputedly housed more than 300 Monks and was burned down 12 times. Most of the present remains in Fore probably date from around the 15th century.

The valley in which Fore sits is very panoramic and lush with wonderful views in every direction, truly beautiful.

I won't go into details other than to say Fore is also known for its 7 Wonders.
